Insomnia treatment for adults in Baltimore

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a short course that retrains when and how you sleep. It does not use medication.

We see most patients via telehealth with Maryland-licensed clinicians, and a limited number of clinicians also see patients in person.

Whether CBT-I is right for you

Insomnia counts as chronic after three months of trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting back to sleep, on at least three nights a week. Early commutes and changing shifts can make a steady sleep schedule hard to hold. A few bad nights can settle into a pattern of watching the clock, where the harder you try the more awake you feel.

CBT-I works from your actual schedule, changing the timing, habits and worry that keep the pattern going. Loud snoring or pauses in breathing can point to sleep apnea, a breathing problem that may occur together with insomnia. We treat the insomnia. A partner treats the apnea, and your clinician coordinates the referral.

Clinicians accepting Baltimore patients

The clinicians below are taking new Baltimore patients. Availability is confirmed when you book.

Stephanie Dimaria, LCSW, CBT-I

Located in Germantown, MD. Licensed in Maryland and trained in CBT-I.

What happens after you book

The first appointment lasts about 50 minutes, covering how you sleep now, how long the problem has lasted and what you have tried. Next is the sleep diary, a two-minute note each morning of when you fell asleep, when you woke and when you got up. From it your clinician sets a sleep window: a consistent bedtime and wake time built from your own pattern. Most plans are one appointment a week for about six to eight weeks, and early changes may show within the first few weeks. Each step is laid out on ourCBT-I treatment page.

Questions about care in Baltimore

Which insurance plans do you accept?

The plans currently billed for Baltimore patients are Aetna, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna / Evernorth, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare / Optum. We review coverage before treatment and tell you the expected cost. Self-pay is available.

Can I be seen from outside Baltimore?

Yes, anywhere in Maryland. You must be physically in the state during the appointment, because the licence follows where you are. A private room at home, at work or on campus is fine. Guilford Avenue only matters if you request an in-person visit.

Does your clinic provide sleep studies?

No. A sleep study is an overnight test that measures breathing and movement and is used to investigate problems such as apnea. Insomnia is identified from your history and your sleep pattern. Apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.
